SPLENDID RACING AT HAPPY VALLEY.
BOXING EVE'S BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE.
MR. WONG AND MR. CHARLES IN FORM..
FAVOURITES ROMP HOME. [BY EARLY BIRD.]
There was a good attendance at Happy Valley on Saturday afternoon to witness the 4th Extra Race Meeting. The fields with the exception of the Substitute States word satisfactory, and Mr. C. 8. M. Alves, the Handicapper, should be, pleased with the results, most of the races were closely contested. Mr. P. M. Hodgson took the place of Mr. Fiddes Wilson as Starter and st times I did not envy him his duties sa the presence of novices in some of the races must have been very trying. It is a pity these riders will insist on hanging at the rear of the starting gost instand: of making an effort to keep their mounts up in the line. · Mr. Hodgson was very patient however, and succeeded in gatting each field away to the satisfaction of everybody despite the höld up. e The Eve Stables had a good day and won with Roxing. Eve and Now Year's Eve. Two other poníës in Caskar and Benhur which are also under the experienced eye of Mr. H. H. H. Priestley also succeeded in being placed. One Third, which is a recently arrived Shanghai pony, won the last race beating Coos Bay and Peck over the one mile and a quarter in very good time. It was a runaway victory and I am inclined to think the riders of the placed ponies allowed the lender to make too much ground in the early stage of the race.
The absence of Mr. C. B. Brown, the genial Secretary of the Jockey Club, was noticed at Saturday's meeting. I am told he will be spending a boliday in England.
The match between Mr. Gordon and Mr. Crabbe was won by the former on Daminged Goods who paid a dividend of $6.40,
The Hand of the King's Own Scottish Borderers added, mate- rially to a very pleasant afternoon's enjoyraent,
THE RACING.
The Brat event was marred by Wuchang who broke away out of a false start and completed the course, twice before he was finally pulled up.
New Year's Eve an odds on favourite succeeded in annexing this event. Fifty Fifty running very strongly was placed second with Warrington third.
The Customs Handicap "B" Class would have been a good thing for As You Like It but unfortu nately, his rider could not make the weight and in consequence was. carrying an extra five pounds. Kom Tong Hall just managed to gain the decision in the last few strides. Benhur who was not fancied in the betting came with a neat run and finished in third place,
Customs Handicap "C" Class was won by the favourite Bright Prospect after an excellent finish. Nara Stag was interfered with at the entrance of the straight other wise he may have won. Mr. Usher did well to get Castle into third place.
Substitute Stakes. Boxing Eve won as he liked. From the fall of the flag until he passed the winning post in almost a canter he was the only thing in the race. I am con- fident Mr. Charles could have broken the record if he had wished Blackstone Hall and San: 'Diego Alled the other places.
Lead Mine Handicap "B" Class Tangle which was second favourite hanaged after a very excellent race in beating Man of War Erstwhile who carried the bulk of the money. in this race must have found the weight too much as he closed up early? or
