On Sunday last the Chinese dollar. dropped to its lowest point, in relation to the tael, on record. It was quoted at #1Tis, 0709375. Yesterday it had re- covered a little and was worth just over Z tael cents. These dollars in normal times are use! or hoarded in the interior, but conditions are such as the present time that no wealthy Chinese feels safe in Lis own country. To those not too familiar with our com plicated exchange system, it may be said that the tacl.is simply a certain weight of silver of a definite purity, and that its value (which 18, the value of silver as metal) is governed principally by the desire of foreign countries to acquire or get rid of it. The old Mexican dollar, which was imported to China, iš, now no more, its place having been taken by a natire dollar of less assured purity. The 10 and 20 cent coins into which this dollar is divided are becoming baser and baser as time goes on The 20-cent coin is supposed to, contain 1 per cent, of Hilver, but those now in general circulat- tion; only cuntain 60 per cent.
