How such proposal originated in Japan is not clear. One report seems to credit it to Viscount Mayesa. Minister of Agricul ture and Camerer. There are ohjee tions on principle, even to the payment of such aims, but they are certainly less serion than those which would apply to the payment of a percentage of the losses The only possible justifications for the prumsal would be that, by intimating their willingness to act in this way, the insurance companies would be giving a farther practical expression of their sym- pathy with the Japanese nation in the disaster which overtook it last autum. And the offres could only contemplate the return of the premiums if they had the fullest assurance that their action would really be welcomed by the Japanese tiov ernment und by all the assured as a prac tical expression of sympathy.

THE CORONET.
Inspector Spear, asking for a cittal, described how Revenue Officer, L. Lanigan, in searching the No. 1 Losun, felt something heavy in the man's trou sera, which he judged to be a Mauser pistol. A struggle ensued, during which the defendant threw something to the No. 2 boaun, who was on the deck above. No. 2 threw it into the sea, and as 11.0 Lanigan saw it whirling through the air, it had the appearance of a Mauser Pistol. A Mauser pista (produced in Court) was afterwards rxovered from the harbour, close to the place where the incident had nccurred.
All three men were remanded until Tuesday morning.
