HONG KONG WATERFRONT

Who's Who

Twenty-six-year-old Francisco de Lage, radio operator of the Panamanian freighter Eastern Trade and holder of the Croix de Guerre avec etolle de bronze, began his seafaring life as 2 Esherman in North African ports aboard trawlers operated by Italians.

"The sea got in my blood,” he says, and after a tew years of

slimy messing with

nets and salting fish, the Frenchman join- ed a coastal vessel plying the Mediterranean

Then he got his first "break" and obtained work on a croSS= Atlantic freighter which took him to the United States several times.

World War 11 saw him as a private at Casablanca, French Morocco, in the Free French Army. Francisco served in the. North African and European campaigns, "I still don't know how I got through all the shoot- ing," he smiled wryly.

The Liberation did not inter- rupt his war services. He was sent to Indo-China to weed out subversive elements.

It was there that Francisco re- ceived his war cross,

"It was fun. I took it as a visit, AK I had never been to Indo- China," he recalled.
