Sichang, Oct. 11.
A mass of twisted charred metal-the wreckage of
transport 81-has abruptly ended the hopes fed by recurrent stories from barbaric Lolo
land that the American pilot and 31 Chinese had survived the crash on September 20 of the CNAC airliner.
Ever since the silver passenger ship disappeared
in rain and fog en route to Kunming, a multi- tude of reports, which seemed based on truth and logic, poured into Sichang. None of them differed in affirming that the plane had made a safe landing and the crew and passengers had
emerged alive.

The search dragged on, but the messages continued to arrive. almost daily, one telling of the efforts by one group of Lolos to extricate the survivora, of the crash from the hands of un- friendly aborigines.

It is now confirmed that four American ex-service'men and a Chinese pilot were kill- ed on Tuesday night at the Kiangwan airport in the northeastern suburb .01 Shanghai in a crush of a C-46, which they were testing. for the Chinese Air Force.
The Americans were R.E. - Rockett from Shameda, Call- fornia, J. E. McCafferey Jr. of Parkersburg, West Vir pinia; Warren Brennan of Proctor, Minnesota, and John H. Kernbach of Stillwell, Kansas-Reuter

The men, who clained represent the "Newspaper Print- ing Association," said that the paper concerned was going to press too early. Detective-Inspector McCahey, Sub-Inspector Hui and a de- termined squad rushed to the scene and "detained" the two men. Up to the time of going to press, they had not succeeded in proving to anyone that they represented any recognized as. sociation or body.
