Annual Meeting Of The "Y"

"Five and half years have elapsed since our last meeting and many are the changes that have taken place in the meantime. My address to you tonight will, I fear, be longer than either you or I would wish but I will try to be as coricise as possible."

In these words, Mr. P. S.-Cas- sidy, Acting President of the European Y.M.C.A.. opened the first post-war annual general ineeting of the Association yester day at the "y" which was largely attended.

Mr. Cassidy revealed that dur- ing internment at Stanley a com- inillee of members spent a consi- derable time planning for the fu- ture. They evolved a scheme by which Government would be ask- ed to exchange the present, site for one further out and on the new site would be erected pre- mises which would be on a big- ger scale than the present ones.

The present building is valueri In the books at $350,000 and the "Y" was unable to regain possession of it, it might be as well to open negotiations with Land Forces with a view to its disposal and, the proceeds of sale could theis be used for a building, provided in the mean- Lime the grant of a new site could be obtained from Government.

new

Tribute was paid to Mr. Ingram for the loyal and conscientious way in which he has carried on. He devoted much of his time at Stanley to keeping the "Y" in be ing and during his leave in Eng- land he was in constant touch with the National Council.

Mr.

being

Railton had also worked very hard for the "Y" but had now accepted a Government ap- pointment, so that his services as. Assistant Secretary were lost, Mr. Casaldy continued.

The Future Speaking of the future of the Association, Mr. Cassidy appealed for more members and said that' in the past too much has been left lo a mere handful of keen people, Too many members were taking advantages of the facilities the "Y" had to offer and give nathing in return.'

Reference was made in the course of the meeting to those _members who fell in action or who otherwise lost their lives during the war years. The meeting stood in silence for a few moments in tribute to the departed.

The following were elected to the Board of directors:

Messrs. J. A. Blackwood, A. S. Mackichan, A. J. C. Taylor, C. Travers, J. Moodle, M. L. H. Rail- ton, P. S. Cassidy and Prof. B. Robertson,

The other vacancies will be fill- ed by the head of the three Ser- vices and the three members of the Members Council ·

In proposing a vote of thanks to Mr. Cassidy, Prof. R. Robert- son said that no annual General Meeting had been held the last .6% years and during those years Mr. Cassidy had done all the work. He had given ungrudging- ly and unstintly to the Associa- tion a lot of time and hard work. Memorial

At the meeting it was also re vealed that efforts were made to get assistance from the Canadian "y" towards, a new building which it was hoped would be 'a memorial to the Canadians who fought for Hong Kong.
