NEW AMERICAN NAVAL

POLICY IN PACIFIC

Pearl Harbour, Oct. 11,

A new United States Navy-policy in the Pacific, calling for a strong Aleutian base-near Siberia and the extension of its outpost 3,000 miles westward to Guam, has been announced at a press conference at Pearl Harbour

The policy was made public: by Admiral John H. Towers, commander of the Pacific Fleet; who conferred recently with President Truman and high. Navy officials in Washington.

* Admiral Towers declared that Guam (8,318 miles west of Pearl Harbour) would be turn- ed into an outpost as strategi- cally Important as Pearl Har- bour, long the symbol of the might of the American Navy in the Pacific.

The Admiral said the new Pacific policy would be to con- centrate permanent naval in stallations in Alaska, the Aleu- tians, Hawaii and the Marianas, including Guam

Admiral Towers said he talked with Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Chief of Naval Opera- tions, while in Washington, and that Admiral Nimitz had agreed with his views ori the new alignment of naval power in the Pacific.
