MATCH-MAKER AND HIS OPPONENT!

NEGRO WINS 74 OF 80 FIGHTS

London, October 24.

THEN John Henry Lewis, the American negro, looking less like a world boxing. champion than an unobtrusive tourist, arrived on board the Queen Mary at Southampton, he was obriously puzzled by the fact that one of the first to greet him as the liner docked was his English opponent, Len Harvey.

Harvey soon made it clear to the American that, in addition to being his challenger. he was the Wembley matchmaker, and in that capacity was there to offer him a welcome, and make arrangements for the journey to his training quarters. Lewis, with a broad smile. returned Harvey's greeting with warmth.

They travelled back to London together and Harvey, acting the host to perfection, looked after the comfort of the American, It was an pointed out interesting features of the landscape. difficult to realise, writes Joe Bromley, that in three weeks time at Wembley on November 9-they would meet again in a grim ring battle.

PROBABLE COACHES AT OXFORD

SHORT FINAL-PRACTICE FOR BOAT RACE

London, October 24. THE

THE rowing events at Cambridge this term have been fixed in such a way that practice for the Trial Fights cannot become really serious until the crews of the Coxswainless Fours are set free after October 31, whilst a few leading oars- men will be involved until November 14 in train- ing for the Colquhouns.

Tace.

Thus the main practice can occupy only four weeks and as at least the winner of the Colquhouns seldom fails to gain a Trial Cap, the crews cannot be complete until within a fortnight of the There is certainly no chance of staleness appearing. Already, however, a couple of clinker trial eights are at work, made up of those not rowing in Fours, and in the way some of the hundred or more candidates can be progressively weeded out. These crafts, writes Conrad Skinner, are approbriously named! And there is a tendency to feel that pre-eminence in them goes little way towards winning a cap, since the Fours will release 40 to 50 ostensibly superior candidates for the 16 ultimate places. Nevertheless, I have known more than one sail right through-flowers may still grow to perfection even when potted out on "dung-barges."
