A RECORD VOTE OF 45,000,000

EXPECTED

New York, To-day.

The progress of the polling in the Presidential election so far indicates that a record vote of about 45,000,000 will be registered. President Roosevelt, accompanied by eight members of his family, including his 86-year old mother, voled at his home in Hyde Park. The President quietly gave his full name at the behest of the palling-booth officials, which was the signal for the click- ing of cameras in operation with a dozen news reel ezmeras,

At about the same time Gövernor Alfred Landon, alighting from his train, was saluted by 19 shots fired by a national guard. He went to the booth of a motor-car salesroom at Indeper dence, Kansas, to record his vote, accompanied by his family and father. In reply to someone's shout of “Where's your high hat”” Mr. Landon answered: “I haven't any high hat; I still wear the same size."

Ex-President Hoover voted at his home at Pakalio, Cali- forvis, while the Union Party's candidate, Mr. Lemke, voted at Fargo, N. Dakota

.:

Early figures from the two critical States of Michigan and West Virginia showed the former favouring Mr. Landon and the latter Mr. Roosevelt. Colonel Frank Knox, the Republican nominee for the Vice-Presidency, left the booth remarking “Busí- ness as usual,” and went to his day's work at a newspaper office.

At many big cities like New York and Chicago the conges- tion at the polls was so great that important personages like| the Postmaster-General, Mr. James-A. Farley, were forced
