SOUTH AMERICAN CHARTERING.

Heavy Grain Freights.

Unusual activity in the charter) ing of ships for the River Plate is Tousing some comment in shipping circles.

Fifty vessels, of 800,000 total tonnage, have been chartered on the Baltic for the River Plate-an exceptional figure, in view of the fact that in the corresponding period last year the figures were only half that total.

In spite of this activity, rates remained practically stationary. The majority of these fifty vessels will go out to South America in ballast. Rates are approximately 183. for prompt vessels of 7,000 and 8,000 tons, and 198. Tor handy steamers of about 5,509, tons. The bulk of the business has been trans- acted for the latter class.

,''

Little or no profit is anticipated by the steamship, owners at these rates, but they are anxious, where possible, to keep their vessels in commission rather than to lay them up.

"

The cargoes from the River Plate will be grain, chiefly wheat and maize...

In view of their many disappoint ments in recent years, owners are. not inclined to attribute any parti-' cular significance to the present revival, and they do not consider that the week's activities can ba regarded as in any sense a herald of general recovery.

"Weather mostly fine. Mot with
