IS FRIENDSHIP DYING OUT!

THE CHINA 'MAIL.

"Friendship," said Emerson, in one of the wisest essays over pen- ned, "is too good to be believed."! Emerson was writing in the year 1841, but the truth and wisdom of that remark remain undisputed (writea Beatrice Kean Seymour in the "Sunday News").

Real friendship is certainly one of the lovely things of life for which there is no substitute "just as good." But lots of people nowa days don't believe it, and some of the rest of us try to pretend that we don't. "Friendship," we say cynically, is not only too good to be believed; it is too good to be endured."

Like all the other good things of life, friendship is not to be had for the asking. A lovely, delicate lower, it needs care alike in the growing and in the plucking. But to so many people to-day the pretty flower of acquaintanceship, grow- ing so plentifully by the wayside,

Getting actually to know people is voted rather a bore, like the obligations it carries. Besides, "going in off the deep end" after a friend's reputation is not among the more popular social pastimes. The world must be amused, and has always paid, in my estimation, a good deal much for the privilege.
