EUCALYPTUS TREE.
Having thus aet forth the advantages to be looked for from the planting of the eucalyptus on the Campagna, he went on to propose, as a measure to be added in Committee to the bill he was urging the Senate to adopt, that the Government should, on fair torms, grant a loase to the Trappist monks at the Tre Fontane of a tenuta or farm, 450 hectare in extent, which adjoined their convent, and had several times been put up for sale without finding a purchaser, on condition that these monks, who were officially recognised as the "Agricultural Society of the Tre Fontane,” should undertake to plant it with eucalyptus trees.
Such is the proposal made yesterday by Count Torell, and lawful for one not deeply versed in agricultural matters to venture art opinion, I would say that it has all the chance of success and all the im portance attributed to it by its author, have myself seen the grove of eucalyptus trees at the Tre Fontane, and cau, at til. events, vouch for the prosperous appearance it presents. Thirty-five specien, I was told on my visit, are cultivated there; nome, of course, as experiments, which may or may not alifmately succeed. Some of the oldent trees, varying between seven and sight →→ years of age, belonging chiefly to the globulus species-that richest in febrifugal
metres, aud in seven years more would be worth 40 or 50 francs.
Exception will probably be taken by a large section of the public and press in Italy to any such contrset belag catered into by the Government with an occlesiz stioal body. But, as Count Torelli rightly observes in a valuable pamphlet he had written on the subject, and which will be published in the course of a few days, "The fact of the monks being members of sre Ifgions oorporation forms no obstacle, since for us they are so no longer, but represent a civil society. True, these individuals are of Trappists; but this is a peculiarly happy members of the great French Corporation circumstance for us, since we would therain have a guarantee for the faithful falliment of their undertaking, and setting saldo this oumbination, what other would you propose? This enterprise sanct be carried out without sacrifice of life, and only by intelligent men aubject to sovere discipline."
