LABOUR SHORTAGE
Labour shortage continued to be a
serious problem for Hong Kong in
1989. As with many industries in Hong Kong, we have experienced manpower shortages, in our case, especially of bus
captains and mechanics. Fortunately,
the situation has improved and
although shortages still exist, it is now manageable.
To help alleviate the shortage of bus
captains, we recruited, for the first
time, lady bus captains to drive the
small air-conditioned single-deck buses.
At the end of the year, we had eighty-
eight lady bus captains on eight routes
and their performance has been satisfactory. Furthermore, with the
approval of Government, we have recruited 80 skilled mechanics and bus-
body workers from China. These
workers have arrived in February,
1990 and have been integrated into
our workforce.
In order to attract new recruits and
to retain existing employees, staff
remuneration was revised during the
year. With effect from Ist June, 1989,
a pay-rise of 12% was granted to our 8,200 daily-rated employees. These pay increases represented an additional
annual cost to the Company of $80
million. As part of the pay-rise, both
the Good Service Bonus and the Safe Driving Bonus for Bus Captains were
also increased. As a result, the current average monthly take-home pay for most of the bus captains operating 2-axle buses amounts to about $7,200 and for those on the larger 3-axle buses, amounts to about $7,700.
At the end of 1989, KMB has a workforce of 10,568 staff members.
