(3) No unnecessary act which tends to cause fire or explosion shall be done in any petroleum refinery, and every precaution shall be taken therein to prevent waste oil from passing down drains or water-courses and from reaching shipping.

344. All operations in any petroleum refinery in con- nexion with the business carried on therein, shall be supervised by the licensee or by some responsible person acting under the orders of the licensee.

345. (1) If fire of any description occurs in a petroleum refinery, the licensee or some other responsible person shall immediately notify the Fire Brigade.

(2) There shall be provided in every petroleum refinery such foam-producing apparatus and such other fire-extinguish- ing appliances as shall be required by the Chief Officer of the Fire Brigade, and all persons employed in a petroleum refinery shall be instructed periodically in and become conversant with the proper method of using such apparatus and appliances.

346.-(1) No tank in any petroleum refinery having a capacity exceeding 140 gallons shall be repaired in any manner involving the use of hot rivets or other source of artificial heat until a certificate by an approved person that the tank has been thoroughly ventilated and rendered free from inflammable vapour has been produced to the Licensing Authority.

(2) Until such certificate has been issued, no lights or lamps, except portable safety lamps of a type approved by the proper authority, shall be taken into the tank.

347. (1) Every petroleum refinery shall be closed, and no work shall be permitted therein, between the hours of sunset and sunrise unless-----

(a) the petroleum refinery is lighted by electricity throughout, or

(b) special permission to open the petroleum refinery and to do work therein has been given by the proper authority.

(2) Such permission shall only be given in case of

emergency.

348.-(1) Every storage shed shall be constructed of masonry, iron, or other non-inflammable material, and the floor of every such shed shall be tiled or paved or constructed of earth or concrete.

(2) Such floors may be covered with wooden boards or light wooden flooring for the purpose of preventing damage to the barrels, drums, or tins stored in the storage shed.

(3) The doorways and other openings of every storage shed shall be built up to a height of not less than two feet above the level of the ground outside it, or the floor of such shed shall be sunk to a depth of not less than two feet below the level of the ground, or the storage shed shall be surrounded with a masonry wall or embankment or both.

(4) Every storage shed shall be adequately ventilated by the provision of ventilators at high and low level.
