bathrooms, kitchen and rear quarters and all ducting for water and drainage services. Dependent on whether two or three bedroom units are required the lounge is planned at right angles or parallel to the flank walls. This system involves only minor structural change and one set of bills of quan- tities can cover either unit.
Site levels were pre-determined by the overall plan for the surrounding area and extensive filling was required over the northern half of the site. As piling was found to be impractical some 40 ft. of underbuilding had to be completed on two of the blocks before filling could commence.
R. C. Cross Walls
The structural system adopted was reinforced concrete cross walls to an egg-crate pattern over spread founda- tions. This method is fast and econo- mical and has the advantage of fixed dimensions throughout the height of the building.
With a view to the reduction of re- current maintenance costs a permanent exterior cladding of shanghai plaster and mosaic tiles was used. Locally manufactured asbestos screen-wall tiles were used on the rear quarters facade to conceal the drying area while still affording light and ventilation.
