TYPE II GOVERNMENT STAFF QUARTERS

ITED below the Peak Road on the southern slope of Mt. Gough

at an elevation of 900 ft. above sea level, the new Type II Government staff quarters, Mansfield Road, com- mand a magnificent panoramic view of the southern shores of Hong Kong Island and the sea beyond.

The scheme comprises four 13- storey apartment blocks with a total of 75 three-bedroom and 25 two- bedroom flats for senior government officers. The initial contract for site- formation, foundations and superstruc- ture also included road formation works allowing access to the govern- ment site and opening up the sur- rounding area to private residential development.

The long, narrow site runs from north to south and it was decided to plan four separate blocks thus permit- ting each one to be angled south of west while still retaining uninterrupted prospect. Although still facing nearer to west than is perhaps desirable, deep

overhangs to bedroom windows and the deep veranda coupled with through ventilation to the lounge have offset the effect of direct sun. Indeed, the west to south-west aspect has proved to be an asset in the late afternoon and evening sun.

Government's specified schedule for Type II Quarter comprises a com- bined lounge and dining room, two or three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a cen- tral store or hot room, kitchen, drying area and servants' quarter, all within a gross area of 2,245 sq. ft. (3 bed-

room type) including staircases and structure.

The Mansfield Road plan, conform- ing to this specification, has a tight central core containing the main stair- case and lift and service or escape staircase. This core also houses the electrical, telephone and television trunking and, an innovation to gov- ernment housing, a fully charged, wet- riser, fire fighting system with run-out hose reels on each main landing.

Planned on either side of the cen- tral core are the two main bedrooms,
