In lieu of separate passports or other
documents of nationality, it is the British Army
practice to include all soldiers' dependents on a
nominal roll, and I understand that you are enquiring
of the quarantine authorities whether they would be
prepared to accept a general certificate from the
military medical authority in Hong Kong to the effect
that all the women and children include in the nominal
roll have been duly immunised against all quarantinable
diseases, and if so, the form of certificate required.
I would now further enquire whether the
Philippine immigration authorities would be prep red to
accept a similar certified nominal roll as evidence of
nationality and permit the temporary entry of such
soldiers' dependents without further formality.
While I sincerely tr st that the need for any
evacuation from Hong Kong as contemplated may be
obviated, I would express my deep gratitude to the
United States and Philippine Governments and to the
American and Filipino peoples for the practical sympathy
they are showing to British refugees.
With kindest regards, I am, dear Mr. High
Commissioner,
Yours very sincerely,
5. Ayatt-Smith.
H... Consul-General.
