No. V SECTION.
CHAPTER IV.
Headquarters
Lyemun Barracks.
Area. The Section comprises the Lyemun group of Batteries, the Lyemun Redoubt, and the ground to the south and east.
Object.-Its purpose is to protect the Lyemun Pass and mine-field, and to guard against an attack on its rear viâ Stanley or Tytam Gaps.
Garrison. In addition to its garrison of Artillery and Engineers, the Section has a force of 245 infantry from the Hong Kong Regiment.
Disposition.-100 men should be pushed forward as an outpost on Tytam Gap, and 100 placed on the side of Mount Parker above Stone Lodge, to act as a support to the outposts and cover their retreat if necessary. The remaining infantry to hold Sywan Redoubt, assisted by 3 Maxims on parapet mountings.
Communications.—Communication in the Section will be by telephone, a line now being made from Lyemun Barracks to Tytam Gap, with a branch to Sywan Redoubt. Sywan Redoubt must be held at all costs, otherwise the Lyemun guns become untenable.
Food Supply--Food and ammunition can be supplied either by land or by water from Victoria. Water is obtained from wells, pumped up by coolie labour.
Dressing Station.-A dressing station will be established at the office of the R.E. Foreman of Works, the wounded being sent to the base hospital, Wellington Barracks, as necessary, either by land transport or by water.
Attack. The principal attack would be by ships from sea, supplemented perhaps by a land attack from the direction of Stanley. Shelter-trenches should be made at Tytam Gap, and also above Stone Lodge on Mount Parker if constant cover could not be obtained.
Patrols and Piquets.A patrol should be pushed along the contour cleared to Tytam Reservoir, to communicate with No. IV Section.
By night a piquet will watch the landing place at Sywan Bay.
