5. The Harbour Master will provide for the examination steamers the following personnel, which includes a regular system of reliefs :—

1 Senior Examining Officer.

10 examining officers.

12 engineers.

12 firemen.

12 coxswains.

24 sailors.

18 signallers (found by R.G.A., and dis- tributed to the examination steamers marked with a * in paragraph 3).

The Senior Examining Officer will represent the Chief Examining Officer afloat, and will be on board the sixth launch, to which reference is made in paragraph 3. The examining officers† will be selected for their intimate knowledge of the shipping usually frequenting the port.

All pilots will be placed by the Governor under the orders of the Chief Examining Officer, who will retain under his immediate directions as many of them as may from time to time be necessary to carry out these regulations.

6. The examination anchorages, where vessels are to be brought to for examination, are outside the examination lines, and are shown on the chart or map accompanying the Defence Scheme. They may be described as follows :—
