Arrivals contique in fair quantities, Feathers. Market quiet. Stocks increasing. Cotton.-Market very strong. No business for Export to Europe is being done. Tallow. Owing to the approach of the hot weather, briness in White Tallow is suspended. In Green Tallow, which is not so succeptible to heat, a small busines is transacted. Wood Oil,-Hardly any demand. Sesamumseed.- Market strong and WASTE SILK-Market quiet, without any prices advancing, especially for the Yellow Seed. change in prices. Settlements from April 12th | Strawbraid.-Market was at a standstill during to April 25th, 1,500 p.cule. There is no important business to report from America, and European buyers have been almost entirely confini g their attention to 23 inch, the demand for which has seemingly incre-ed. Echizen. The market has remained firm, and there as been an in- creasing demand for superior quality goods, which, however, continue difficult to olitain. is pleasing to note that more care is observed in the classification Weights are more reliable. and the shortcomings and defects of pieces are more plainly indicated. Kawamata.-Prices are a little firmer, the chief enquiry being for 36 inch goods.

HONGKONG SHARE QUOTATIONS.

HONGKONG, 14th May, 1909.-The market has ruled firm during the week under review but in the absence of sellers to meet the demand in most stocks, business has been restricted. Rates with very few exceptions are higher and the ~ market closes steady to strong. Exchange on London /Tcloses at 1/9 and on Shanghai at 744.

BANKS.-Hongkong and hanghais have changed hands in small lofs at 945. but with a continued demand the rate improved to 950- with buyers, and apparently no s-llers at the moment. The London rate remains unchanged. Nationals call for no remarks.

MARINE INSURANCE.-Unions have been in fair demand and the rate has risen to 845, after small sales at 830,835, and 84, the market clos ing steady with buyers at the higher rate.

Cantons have advanced to 200 after sales at 195. North Chinas are quoted at Tls. 100 buyers with no sales to report. Yangstzes are steady at 225.

FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkong Fires with a demand from the North suddenly hardened and after sales at 337 gradually rose to 345, at which the market closes firm. Chinas have been placed in fair lots at 107 bat close firmer with bayers at 1 8.

SHIPPING.-Hongkong, Canton and Macaos continue to rule steady and small sales have been effected at 31, the market closing with sellers at that rate. Indos ruled weak in the early part of the week, but a demand from the North again sent the rate up to 80 for the combined shares, and a fair business has been transac ed at that, after small sales at 79. Star Ferrys have been placed at the improved rate of 26, and Shells have improved to 58/6 wih buyers but no sales. China Manilas Continue on offer at 11.

REFINERIES.-China Sugars have ruled firm and after several sales at 137 have been placed at 140, at which latter rate they close strong. Luzons remain unchanged with sellers at 16, and no business to report.

MINING.-Raubs have advanced considerably ard after a small sale at 8 in the early part of the week close at 93 bayers, with but few sales at intermediate rates. Chinese Engineerings are enquired for in the North at 164 ex dividend but we have heard of no sales. Charbonages could be placed at 625 but no shares seem to be available.

DOCKS, WHARVES AND GODOWNS.-Hong- kong and Whampoa Dooks have suffered another relapse and are now quoted at 70 with sellers and no business to report. Kowloon Wharfs have changed hands during the week at 57, 57 and at time of closing at 58, the market closing steady with buyers at the last rate. Shanghai D cks remain unchanged and without any reported business.

Hong-

LANDS, HOTELS AND BUILDINGS. kong Lands continue in demand and with but few shares obtainable the rate has advanced to 102 after sales at 1014. Hotels have been placed at 71 (old) while the new issue is on offer at 42, without inducing any buyers to come forward. Humphreys have found further buyers at 9 and at time of closing more shares are wanted at the rate. We have nothing further to report under this heading.
