For Marseilles:-247 bales raw silk, 150 bales waste silk, 10 cases human hair. For Milan :-70 bales raw silk. For London :--25 bales raw silk, 8 cases silks, 4 cases cigars, 1 case blotting paper, 2 cases private effects, 6 cases tea from Foochow. For Lyons:--260 bales raw silk.
Per P. & O. steamer Japan, sailed on 13th Oct For Manchester:-100 bales waste silk. For Glas-
so far excellent progress, is bemoaning her fate of becoming merely a Port of transhipment when Changsha was opened. The value of the Imports of Foreign Cotton Goods increased about 300 per cent, over 1902, which amply shows what valuable adjuncts to the trade these inland cities are, when they are properly opened up. It behoves British traders especially to see that is done to the greatest extent possible, if they wish to retain for Manchester products anything of a field in China, for Manufacturers in the United states are making. determined efforts to usurp the trade. It has been frequently pointed out the quantity of foreign Piece Goods imported into China cannot have much more than just touched the fringe of the open Ports, so that every effort should be made to open up new marketa in the interior, which can only be done by railways and, therefore, these enterprises ought to receive every support from these interested in manufactures at home, instead of being treated with suspicion on the part of investors and thus hampered through the want of necessary capital. It is to be hoped that Britishers, who have hitherto always been the pioneers of trade, will not go back on that role and, like some others that could be named, wait until fresh trade routes are opened for them. There is some pos- sibility of a trade route via Ch'ang-te to the West (Kweichow and part of Szechuan) being adopted in lieu of the dangerous journey via Ichang and the Yangtze Gorges. During the year a total value of Hk. Tls. 18.131 went forward under Pass from Yochow by the above route to Kweichow, I am told that these goods encountered no difTe Oil ficulties and that the route is considered a good one. Pięce Goods. Except that clearances have continued on a fairly liberal scale the situation in this department of trade during the interval has been exceedingly quiet. There is no news from the North of a disturbing, nature or other- wise regarding the progress of the War, although early in the interval a rumour was spread that another Russian Cruiser and escaped from Port Arthur and was making for this Port, which tem- porarily upset the plans arranged for some steamers to Japan. However, it was only for a day or two that any apprehension was felt and commercial intercourse was soon resumed. The Japanese have again been the principal buyers, gow:-4 cases blackwoodware. For London or but Newchwang has probably taken, the most in Goole:-125 bales waste silk. For London or actual shipments during the week. The dearth Manchester:-133 bales waste silk. For Lon- of news from that Port still continues and, except don:-1,101 bales hemp, 1,298 boxes tea, 166 that the goods are going there, it is difficult to packages tea, 100 casks ginger, 245 rolls matting, tell whether they are for consumptive require-60 bales canes, 10 cases black woodware, 6 cases ments, or to meet the wants of the relieving army. dried ginger, 1 case feathers, I case dried lychees, It is rumoured that Japanese houses have on- 1 case cigars. deavoured to make forward contracts for Drills with New York, but the makers are engaged up to February and decline to book orders beyond that at present. With Tientsin business has continued very quiet, though at the close an en- quiry has sprung up for light American Sheetings, but the market is hare! Trade with the River Ports is dull, the financial troubles in Hankow and tight money market having a very depressing effect. The River still keeps very high and that no doubt interferes with the shipunts to Eze- chuen. The course of prices at the Auction may usually be taken as a guide to the nearer markets; gauging them in that way they cannot be very brisk. As regards the home markets the latest quotation for American Cotton seems to be the chief item of interest. The transition from the old to the new crop is much more pronounced than usual, the decline for the last fortnight be- ing from 6.70d. to 5.54d., while last year it was from 7.72d. to 6.02d. The effect of this decline on the home markets has already been discounted, the forward business in Manchester for November, December and January shipment being on the basis of 5. No reliable information regarding the probable size of the crop is yet to hand, but it is not likely to very excessive, not because of the scarcity labour, as that is only a matter of price. It has been shown that even if growers had to pay three or four times as much for labour as they have been in the habit of doing, and the Cotton only realised 7 cents, it would pay them too well to allow it to remain unpicked. To return to Liverpool—the quotation for Egyptian is 74d. The export of Plain Cottons from Lan- cashire last month to Hongkong and China was 35,000,000 yards, and 7,000 bales of yarn! The market in Manchester is lower for May to July shipment, before which it is not easy to arrange purchases. From New York the telegraphic in- formation has not been quite so profuse, but it is sufficient to show that manufacturers are still holding very high ideas of the values of their wares! Some shippers consider prices are, and have been, ridiculously high, and fully expect that operators here will have a sad awakening before long. The decline in Native Cotton has enabled most of the Local Mills to make some satisfactory forward contracts.
