HONGKONG, 8th April, 1904.-The market opened after the Easter holidays with a decided- ly firmer tone, and rates in many of the leading stocks have improved materially; a fair business has been transacted, chiefly in Indos, Banks and Sugars, and the market coses comparatively active with a firm tendency.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais, The firmness reported in our last circular continuing and the demand remaining unsatisfied, the rates quickly rose from $6171 to 3640, with intermed- icate sales $625, $630 and $635. On time shares have been placed at 8660 for August and at about equivalent rates for June and September. Docks, Etc.- The market closes at 8640 for cash. Last Loa- don quotation per Reuter is £62. Nationals continue in request at $371 with no shares available.

be-n in demand at $56) without bringing any shares on the market. The Northern Insurances remain unchanged and without any local

business.

FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs have ritled steady with small sales at $285 closing with buyers, and Chinas at 883 also closing firm.

SHIPPING.-Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have improved to $271 sales, the demand at $264 reported our last not being met. The stock closes firm at the former rate with likely buyers. Indo-Chinas have been quite active and a very fair business have been put through at rates between $91 and $90 for cash, and at rather less than equivalent rates forward, our latest advices from Shanghai say that "quola- tions cannot be given with any reliability' but their latest defiuite rate quoted is Tls. 69, which at the high

of exchange rate now ruling works out at about $95. China Manilas have been on offer during the week at $22, without sales and close with sellers, Douglases have found buyers at $34, $34 and $35 and close steady at the last rate. Ferries (old) have been placed at $31, and new shares at $181.

Star

REFINERIES-China Sugars have been in strong demand both for cash and forward, aud the almost complete absence of sellers at the last quoted rate quickly sent the quotation to $117 after fair sales at $115 and $116 and at equivalent rates forward. At time of closing although no shares are on offer it is doubtful whether business to any extent could be done. Luzons remain unchauged and without business. MINING. With the exception of a few small sales of Raubs at 86 and $61 there is rothing to report under this heading.

LANDS, HOTELS. AND BUILDINGS.-Hong- kong Lands continue quiet with probable sellers at 8145 for cash. Hongkong Hotels have been placed at $135 and at time of writing

FREIGHT.

287

Messrs. Wheelock & Co., in their Report of the 31st March, state-Our Homeward freight market remains in much the same state as at last time of writing and there is nothing of interest to report except that, as we predicted, the rise in freights to New York via Suez, has come to pass, and the rate is now 30/- a ton for general cargo and if the scarcity of tonnage continues shippers must be prepared to face a further increase. Coastwise-Newchwang is now open and several coasters have gone up in anticipation of good employment; but news has just come to hand that martial law has been proclaimed there by the Russians; beans and beancake are declared contraband and shippers to neutral ports must deposit the money value of the cargo as security against transhipment to Japan and Corea. This will seriously hamper trade, and is a very high. handed action on the part of the Russians, be considering Newchwang ia supposed to a Chinese Treaty Port. The large * time chartering business that has been done recently has now slacked off as the Japanese seem to have got all the tonnage they require; but the demand. still continues for trip-charter and we expect to see good paying rates on the coast for a long time to come. As this goes to press we hear there is some probability of an amicable arrange- ment being made between ship owners and the Russian authorities with regard to the export of
