We

CANTON, 28th March, 1904. —Re-reels. hear of no fresh business in this class. Fila- tures. Some rather large transactions have taken place owing to the simultaneous fall in dollar prices and exchange. A good number of contracts have been settled for 6th crop silk. From sales made we quote: Yee Wo Loong 9/11 at $850, Kwong Ho 10/12 at $825, Yee Wo Cheong 18/22 at $710. The stock of native filatures is nearly exhausted. During the current season reelers have sustained large losses and it is expected that many must close their flatures. Short-reels.- Since our last report some tran-actions have taken place, for the higher grades holders are asking comparatively dear prices. We quote: Miu King Lon 14/16 6th crop at $840.7 Waste Silk.-A fair business has been done at moderate prices.

31.30 to 32.00

April 8th, says-There has been very little Mr. Eduljee, in his report, dated Hongkong. business done during the past fortnight, the firm- ness of bolders again restricting purchases to actual daily requirements. Occasionally, how- ever, sporting offers at $1 to $2 per bale under quotations were made hy dealers to test the of the neighbouring markets, as well as Bombay, feelings of holders, but considering the condition

a much bolder front has been assumed, and for the present no decline is likely to be submitted to, more especially in the face of a declining exchange. Resumption of demand is not looked for until towards the end of the month, as the tomb-worshipping festival has commenced and country-buyers are returning to the interior.

Local Manufacture:-The local mill is working short time and no business is reported.

Japanese Yarn:--Stocks of No. 208 are running very low and some 150 bales No. 16s are reported sold at from $126) to $127, closing strong.

Raw Cotton-continues quiet but firm, and no business has been effected in Indian descriptions. Prices have advanced and are now on a level with those of China kinds. Dealers, however, choose to buy Thoongchow and Ningpo in preference to superfine Bengal, and sales of about 250 bales of the former are reported at from $32 to $33. Estimated unsold stock 1,500 bales Bengal and 300 bales Chinese. Quotations are Indian $28 to $33 and Chinese $31 to $33.

Exchange on India, in sympathy with the fall in sterling rate of Silver, has continued to decline, and now closes at Rs. 129 for T/T and Rs. 129 for Post. On Shanghai 724 and on Yokohama 861.

The undernoted business in imported and local yarns is reported from Shanghai for the fortnight ended the 26th ultimo, viz :

Indian:----Notwithstanding a

very restricted business, there has been a good feeling in the market and better prices were obtainable. Sales aggregate 4,000 bales, comprising 1,225 hales No. 108, 225 bales No. 128, 450 bales No. 14s, 1.580 bales No. 16s and 520 bales No. 20s. The unsold stock was estimated at 30,000 bales.

Japanese:-

-At a further advance in rates of two to three Taals, about 2,500 bales have been taken up, say No. 168 at from Tis. 90 to 95, and No. 20s at Tls, 96 to 102; market closing very firm.

Local:-In sympathy with imported threads, these spinnings show an advance of 3 to 4 Taela, at which about 2,500 bales No. 14s are reported sold at Tls. 88 to 90; close strong.
