MR. DANIEL TO Boon-man (in Cantonese):—Mr. Chairman, I want to know if the relevant Committee will consider the following. For the target of promotion, 500,000 readers are mentioned, but they are regular readers among members of the public. We have been very inadequate in promoting art to new targets. Will the Committee discuss and formulate policies or ways to promote art appreciation to new targets so as to increase the utilization rate of the Museum?

THE HON. MOK Ying-Fan (in Cantonese):-Thank you, Mr. To, for your question. I am sure that one of the important items in the five-year plan of the Museum will be how to promote visual art. The Committee will certainly consider Mr. To's suggestion thoroughly.

(8) Mr. Chan Kwok-leung asked the following question (in Cantonese): The Cultural Services Division of the Urban Services Department has an establishment staff of many different grades including general administration, clerical, art administration personnel, and contract artists. Please answer the questions given below:

(a) What are the establishment and the respective salaries of the different grades under the Cultural Services Division of USD?

(b) How is the work of the Cultural Services Division divided among Cultural Services Managers, Art Directors, and Contract Programme Coordinators? Please illustrate with examples.

(c) Generally speaking, what kind of art training will be given to Cultural Services Managers? Will they receive training in a specific subject of art? For how long will a Cultural Services Manager stay in a post before being transferred to another?

MR. PAO PING-WING, CHAIRMAN OF THE CULTURE SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in Cantonese):-As at 1 March 1996, the Cultural Services Division has an establishment of 287 civil service posts and 213 contract staff posts. A list of the posts and their salaries is tabulated at Annex 5. It is not appropriate to disclose the salaries of some of the contract staff in public as they are negotiated with the incumbents on a personal basis.

I shall try to give a reply in respect of the division of duties and co-operation among Cultural Services Managers, Art Directors, and Contract Programme Co-ordinators.
