HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL
MISS ADA WONG YING-KAY (in Cantonese): Mr. Chairman, I have two questions. Firstly, I want to know if the consultant report has made concrete recommendation in regard to management and the mode of operation. For example, the consultant of the Hong Kong Stadium suggested that the Department should hand over management to a private company. I just want to know if the consultant of the Museum has ever made that kind of suggestion,
Secondly, I am alarmed to know of the drastic drop in the attendance rate of the Museum of Art. In fact, the Museum was very small when it was located in the City Hall, perhaps 10 times smaller than its new venue. However, the attendance figure for the new Museum was reported to be just half of that in the olden days. The attendance rate has been dropping in the past three years. I hope the Department will provide us with a detailed review report. From paragraph 6 of the reply, we note that not much was spent on promotion. I want to know if we have, within the staff establishment of the Museum of Art, a post for an on-site PR or marketing officer. I can see that some $2 to 3 million was spent on promotion for the Hong Kong Stadium, but only a little over $0.3 million for the Museum of Art. That is a very small sum indeed. I hope Mr. MOK will raise this point for discussion at the meeting of the Museums Select Committee.
THE HON. MOK YING-FAN (in Cantonese): Thank you for your questions, Miss WONG. Firstly, about the consultant report, as I said just now, I haven't read it. I too would like to know the contents of the consultant's study report. After receiving that report, I will study and consider the recommendations therein with Members.
My answer to the question of comparison between attendance figures of the Museum of Art for the City Hall phase and its present location remains the same as my answer given to Mr. Wu. We have to wait for the Museum Select Committee to ask the Department for a report before we can further discuss the issue. On the question of publicity, the Museum of Art does not have a team specially responsible for promotion or publicity work. Miss WONG's suggestion can be raised at the meeting of the Select Committee. If Members agree, then we may be able to put this suggestion into practice.
MISS ADA WONG Ying-kay (in Cantonese): Let me follow up on one more point. Mr. Wu asked about the respective percentage of different types of visual art activities. I notice that the information is not in Annex 4. I hope Mr. MOK will supply us with this information after the meeting.
CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese): Will Mr. MOK supply such information after the meeting?
THE HON. MOK YING-FAN (in Cantonese): No problem.
