Sally Victor Hats Inspired by History
New York-Our hats are off to Sally Victor, milliner with an idea. She basta fer spring collection ca The American Seene," which Koes to prove my oft repealed point that there is nothing haphazard

significant
of news,
Bused entirely upon original de- signs which conform to current key spring silhouettes, this collection is built around the history of the in the 10th Century
US.A.. starting hats worn by Sir
with the
Francis Drake and his gallant crew. down through the puritan hats of the John Alden period, the Southern planters, the Dutch settlers of New York, the Quakers of Pennsylvania. Then through the days of the treka of the covered wagons up to the cur real scene.
Rough Straws Popular This cons the use of rough straws of rustic type, ot natural barnyard wings and quilts, of simple, wearable silhouettes
It plays up citons, the crisp" pique and lingerie types, as well DB other coloured sheer cotton weaves, and striped linens in very gay colour- ings.

Silhouettes ore striking in, that they introduce the larger

Next Importance are the bon- nets which occur again and again through the pages of the American Scene. There are Puritan bonnets, Covered Wagon and Gold Rush bon- nels, these worn. by the women of Pennsylvania in the Conestoga Wagon
daye.
Turning to the scene at Atlantic City, NJ., Ray' coloured hats
and
equally gay accessory accents gave a carnival touch of the 150,000 strollers, on the boardwalk over the Easter! week-end. Sults of navy and black and soft coats In the same colours could be glimpsed under Jackets and copes of fur.
ན་
Straw was widely accepted, with | an almost equal division between the One and the coarse. Veils were everywhere, with virtually every straw hat having a contrasting vell white on black and blue, black on white, and many bright pinks, reds and blues. The strength of char- treuse as a trimming colour in veils, flowers and ribbon fancles on both navy and black struws was out- standing.
