Death Follows Septic Condition

An inquiry was held at the Cen- |tral Magistracy yesterday into the death of a woman, Li Sam-foon, 20, at the Tung Wah Hospital on No- vember 26. Mr. R. A. D. Forrest sat as Coroner, assisted by a jury com- prising Messrs. F. X. M. da Silva, R. C. Wallace and Funk Kim-sheung.

Dr. Lo Chang-de, of Tung Woh Hospital, was the firal witness. He Baid a woman named 1 Sam-foon, 20, was admitted into a first-class ward in the hospital about 8.35 n.m. on October 25. She complained of n pain in the abdomen, which she said had started the day before, and was Ketting worse. The woman also told the doctor that she had given birth to a three-months-old foetus a month previously.

Further questioned, she insisted the pain had only begun the day before. Witness examined her, found her to be suffering from peritonitis, and advised her to undergo an opera- tion if she wished to live. Though unwliling at Arst, the deceased Inter gave her consent, and witness per- formed the operation as the Superin tendent, Dr. Ya Chiu-kwong, was not well that day.

An Admission

The woman told witness that two weeks prior to her entering hospital, she had visited the Po On drug slare, somewhere in Queen's Road West, and was operated upon by two women doctors. She sold they had used forceps. She was conscious all the time, and experienced great pain during and after the operation. She never fully recovered," and for two weeks suffered attacks of pain and chills.

As she showed no improvement. deceased told the doctor, she was ad- vised by one of the women to enter) the Tung Wah Hospital.

After being told this, said witness, he informed Dr. Yu, who later in- formed the police. Two weeks' after the operation in the hospital, ceased's condition Improved, her temperature returned to normal, and there was little pus. She appeared to be more cheerful and ate and slept well. This condition Wus mulntained for 10 days.

Between November 20 and 20, her condition grew worse, and she died About 10.40 pan. un November 20. Before she died, deceased had told witness that one of the women who had operated on her was named Lam. Witness could not find out more, as the deceased was reluctant to

Dr. P. B. Wilkinson, in charge of the Victoria Mortuary, sald he per- formed a post-mortem examination. After detailing the results of his CX- amination, he said deceased had died from septle peritonitis und subse- quent heart failure.

Questioned by the Coroner, Dr.'; Wilkinson said that in view of the history of the case, he had made a special examination of the genital organs, but had found no evidence to show that, the perilonius und ori- ginated there.

Ho Mi, 74-year-old woman, said that the deceased was her niece and was employed by her. The deceased left her employment on September 25, saying she was going back to the country. Before the woman left, wliness had some suspicion of her reason for leaving, and took her to see a doctor, who confrnice ber sus- pleio:is that the woman was preg- nant.

At this point, the Coroner asked the Jury whether they wished proeecd further with the Inquiry. Although it seemed that an illegal operation of some kind had been per- formed, there was yet no proof that that operation was death.

After a short consultation, the Jury sold they did not wish to hear more evidence and returned a verdict of death from natural causes duo lo peritonitis, ndding that there was no evidence of any other cause of death. The Coroner expressed agreement with the verdict.
