The Navy is to have a special corps of short-service officers, to be employed solely on naval duties. This important innova- tion was announced by the Ad- miralty last night.

Although it is nearly six months since the Fleet Air Arm was trong- fered to Admiralty control, a con- i siderable percentage of its olleers is [ still supplied by the Royal Air Force.) Eventually, however, it will be officered entirely by the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines, supplemented by the new category of offlcers.

Entries to the new branch are to April. Candidates must be begin in not less than 17 years of age, the upper limit being "under 23 on Jan. 1 in the year in which they are enter- ed." They must be British subjects of pure European descent, and un- married.

A standard of education, including mathematics, equivalent to that of the At- school certificate, is required. tendance before un Admiralty selec- tion committee and a strict medical examination are also necessary.

A fisherman's plunge into icy seas in a vain attempt

to save a comrade's life was described when the steam trawler Cape Chelyuskin docked at Hull.

Hugh Carmichael, of Hull, the vessel's mate, was the hero of this episode, which had as its setting the Archtic watera south-west of Bear Island.

Great waves were keeping the trawler's decks awash in a gale and it was freezing so hard that the skipper ordered every man below.

But Carmichael's friend. Sidney Poskill, a 23-year-old learner, ven- tured on deck and was swept over- board.

Carmichael heard his cry as the sca caught him. Dashing on deck he grasped a line and threw. it, but Poskilt was too weak to respond to 1escue efforts.

Then Carmichaei tied the line round his own walst, gave the other end to Janother fisherman and leaped into

the sca.

So cold was the water that time after time Poskitt slipped from his grasp. Here is the rest of the story as he told it to the News Chronicle, "I did what I could to help my friend, until everything went black. "I was hauled on board uncon- Actous. The skipper, I was told afterwards. got a boat alongside Posklit and tried to get him out with boathhooks
