New York, Apr. 2.

An astounding story of how his confession to the murder of the Lindbergh baby was extracted by torture, was told by Paul Wendel, former Trenton lawyer, when he was interviewed by a representative of the Brooklyn District Attorney to-day.

Wendel said he was imprisoned for ten days in the cellar of a Brooklyn house. Before he signed the confession he was tortured with fire, strung up by his thumbs to the ceiling, and threatened with a terrible death. French leaders to-day asserted that Germany had failed, in its memorandum delivered yesterday, to answer the French questions on specific European problems. Moreover, Germany had misinterpreted the Locarno Treaty's history and had not offered eastern or central European collective security plans. Further, the German proposals provided for only provisional, instead of permanent, peace.-United Press.
