This minute living organism, which is believed to be the long-sought cause of the influenzal condition, is stated to be the main problem, now confronting the scientists, and the one on which they are concentrating.

Its origin and properties are being inquired into by two full-time experts-Dr. C. H. S. Harris, of London University, and Dr. Leslie Hoyle, of Manchester University, both holders of the Royce |research scholarships, founded under the will of the late Sir Henry Royce, the famous motor engineer.

The two men are devoting their whole time to tracking down the causes of colds and influenzal and to attempting to discover a cure.

Only a few specimens of the virus, jealously guarded in bacteriolo- glen laboratories, ure in existence, an ironical aspect of the situation being that the absence of an in- fluenza epidemic is hampering the efforts of the research workers, They are having to work with specimens obtained a considerable time ago.

Dr. Hoyle described some of his work to a reporter. "In several cuses of influenza no virus has been traced," he said, "and it is not certain that the virus docs produce influenza. We are now trying to obtain more specimens and to produce a serum.

"If we find the virus is the cause of influenza, then we can begin to trace its origin, and eventually to search for a cure or prevent the virus from be- coniing active.
