Contract Problem

Do you ever notice that aces and kings really can be bothersome at times in the play of the hand, if you are not careful? You wil get the lead in the wrong hand, or In your anxiety to cash what looks like good tricks, you will lose the timing factor.

In other words, you will lose con- trol of the hand and give it to your opponents. They will be one Jump ahead of you, which will ruin the entire hand.

Watch the timing factor and see that you do not lose control of the hand. The interesting part of to-day's hand is that there is good play for the declarer and for both of the opponents.

If East had opened a heart, the contract would have been defeated. However, his opening lead was the

North now decided that the best way to assure his contract was to cross-ruff the hand, so he prepared for this by leading the queen of clubs, which West won with the ace. West, could see what the de- clarer was up to and, although he was leading right into a tenace, he returned the deuce of trump. It was won in dummy, by the nine.

The eight of clubs was returned, North winning with the king, and East's jack dropped. Now, before any more clubs could be ruffed, de- clarer took one round of diamonds -leading a small diamond to the ace in dummy.

A small spade was returned and trumped with the seven of hearts. Now the queen of diamonds was cashed and then the ten of clubs was played.

Enst trumped, knowing that otherwise the declarer would make an extra trick. The declurer over- trumped in dummy with the jack of hearts and returned the jack of spades..

West now made a play to prevent the declarer from making five-odd. He trumped with the king of hearts and returned a heart. The king diamonds was cashed and then the ten of diamonds played, which West trumped with the ten of hearts, North over-trumping with the queen and losing the last trick to the nine of clubs.
