A STRANGE DRURY-LANE
ARREST.
ASSAULT CHARGE FAILS.
Mr. John Hutcheson, aged forty- two, described as an Insurance official, of Cranfield-rond, Brock ely, was charged at Bow-street Police Court, in mail week, before Sir Chartres Biron, with assault- ing Police-constable Lawton, 215 E, by striking him in the stomach. Remarking that in all his expert. ence he had never heard a more extraordinary story on both sides. the magistrate dismissed the charge, adding, "It is clear no case has been established."
PC. Lawton said that at 11.40 p.m. on Friday Mr. Hutcheson and another man stood in conversation at the corner of Drury-lane and Long Acre. They were both pointing at the officer, who was on the opposite side of the road, and the other man said something which sounded like, "There's the long. He will fall heavy,' Mr. Hutcheson then sald, "See me fetch him down." They moved towards the officer and he crossed the road to meet them. The second man then aimed a blow at him and as he warded it off Mr. Hutcheson struck him a heavy blow in the stomach. He closed with him, and the second man then jumped on his back. There was a struggle, and the constable blew his whistle, whereupon the When

Did you force both Mr. Hutche- son's arms behind his back?---No. It is extraordinary that for no reason a perfectly respectable should suddenly say, "See. fetch him down." It was rather the act of a lunatic?-It was..
Can you suggest why he should act in this way ?---No.
I put it that your story is ab- solutely incorrect, and that nothing of the gort happened, and that you were never touched by this man or anyone else.-I. was struck by this man.
A witness for the defence (Mr. Garry) was called into court, and the constable swore that he was not the man who was in Mr. Hutcheson's company. There was no other person about at the time.
