YANGTZE DEVELOPMENT.
The Yangtze Engineering Works, which has a 100-ton blast farasce
is near Hankow, considering the installation of | coke ovens, as it is now dependent on contracts for both its ore and coke. Coking coal would have to be brought from Luibokou, a 400- mile railroad haul. The company has a 30-year contract for its ore. The iron deposits in Shantung. formerly owned by the Germans, have been explored by the Japanese with very disappointing results, it is said.
LEIPZIG FAIR A FAILURE The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Chronicle writes under date March 7:-The Leipzig | Fair, heralded, with such a trez- endous campaign of advertise- ment, must at its vary opening be written down KE a failure. No fewer than 150,000 visitors have gone to the fair, raising Leipzig's population of about three-quarters
a million by 20 per cent. Countless special trains from all parts of Germany and abroad, aptomobile services innumerable and nearly every aeroplane in the country have been employed to carry fair guests to the city. Thirteen hundred Germsa and foreign journalists have been taken there free of charge and are being lavishly entertained. Indeed, the amount of money spent on up-to-date boosting of the fair must have been enormous. Yet at the very beginning a note of keep disappointment and serious alarm is sounded in the German Press Naturally with the mark specially low at the moment there is next to nothing on offer. The very small quan tities of goods brought for sale were snapped up by the first comers yesterday. and early in the afternoon the sign "Sold out". was being exhibited in the tax- tite branch and most of the other
* Economic departments. tasion in Germany." #ays the representative of the Forsche Zeitung commenting On the situation as demonstrated by the fair, is making rapid strides, and seriously "minded mant. facturers and traders see in the presant conditions clear signs which give them foriously to think that e catastrophe cannot be far off. The journey towards Austrian conditions is proceed. ing at increasing speed:" This serious situation is due, as I have Foften pointed ont, to Germany's present trade policy, and to the way in which the people are allowed to play about with the rate of exchange. Most careful inquiries convince me there is no reason whatever for the recent I fall of the mark save speculation.
