During the month of August alons the figures for coal raised ware 10,700,000 tons, as compar- ed with 8802,000; lignite, 9,600- |000, as compared with 8,100,000 and coka, 2,200,000, as compared with 1,900,000.
October,
THE COAL POSITION. Interviewed on the subject of the permanent wage agreement in the mining industry, which came into force on the 1st of prominent British coalownar states—There is a general impression in the minds of the public, in spite of every effort at presenting the real facts of the case, that the ton million subsidy was intended to be devos- ed toward the reduction of the price of coal, and a further im- pression that as wages will be reduced still farther in some districts, when the permanent wage agreement comes into force. the prices of coal ought to be still further reduced. The facts of the case are that the subsidy was granted in order to make up the difference between wages and | cost of production and the actual selling price of coal In Marab. under control, the loss of coal sold was over 6s per ton the subsidy was granted to assist in easing down, wages to the point at which production becomes economically possible, and thus it can have no effect in altering selling price. Further, such reduction in wages as have to be made on sad from October 1st. are intended to bring down the cost of production of coal to the economic level; they are of such a naturo as to ensurethatproduction is not carried on at a loss, and do not imply any redaction in selling price. This can only be brought about by an increase of produc- sion on the part of each man employed in the industry; it is not generally realised that the falling off in production per man employed is equal to 70,000,- 000 tons of coal per sunum.
