A Cherbourg message says: Da arrival
at Southampton, the Aquitania will be boarded by police, with instructions to search for a number of professional card sharpers, who have been reaping a rich harvest during the vÖJSCE from New York. A young Ame- rican is alleged to have lost $6,000° ((£1,200) in 息 "friendly" card game with three other men. Energetic measures aro to be taken to attempt to rid ocean- going vessels of the rapidly growing numbers of professional sharpers.
WORK IN BELFAST SHIPYARDS. The attention of the directorate of Messrs. Harland and Wolfe, Belfast, having been drawn to a statement in the Daily News, from their special correspondent. Mr. Hugh Martin, in Belfast, in which be said "Belfast is a city of fear-shipbuilding has ceased, between not a hammer is to be heard on Queen's Island," &c. & Mr. Saxon Payne, & director, and the secretary of Messrs. Hirland and Wolf, stata: "We have at the Queen's Island the present time about 16,000 employees, and I need cat tell you that we don't keep them doing nothing. Just DOW we bave ressels under construction for-the White Star Line, the P. and 0. Co. the Royal Mail Line. the Holland-America Line, the Elder Dempster Line, the Aberdeen Lize, &c. The employment of 16,000 people means that we are in & better position than any shipyard, not only in the United Kingdom but probably in the whole world. In addition to the vessels which are under con- struction we have a very large programme of reconditioning work. You will therefore rea that Mr. Martin's statement is atterly absurd. Like етету other place, owing to the cost of production, there has been modification of the programme that was originally intended, but I am now telling you of work that is actually in band, and whoo tha cost of production comes down, as we hope it will do 8000 8 2 result.of the negotiations that are proceeding. our clients will be encouraged to give us orders for the carrying out of work that has been ads- panded. In the meantime costs have been exceptionally heavy in the shipbuilding trade, and all over the world the industry has been in parlous condition. The
hump set fa towards the end of last year, but at the Queen's fland we have been most fortun- stely situated la comparison with other places, having) d ́a large amount
progress of work i through the whole of the slack" period, and the prospects in Boi. · Tent are better than in any other part of the United Kingdom.· ̈Âl- though we are below air utmost capacity at present we are very little •below maximum. I would like the Daily News to tell us of any ofben skip. uilding establishment in the United Kinzdom that is employ. |ing 16,033 persons in courtant work; it is not a case of short me, we are working, fall Hime.”
