TIMBER FREIGHTS, -

As the American Shipping Board has forbidden its ships to transport timber, the freight rate on timber has advanced by $4 to $14. The Yonan-maru of the Katsuda Kisen Kaisha ja said to i have concluded an agreement for the conveyance of timber from North America to the Far East at $13.50. The present high quotations will probably be short- lived, however, as there are mora tramp ships on the Trans-Pacific line besides the ships participat- ing in the Freight Conference. MARINE INSURANCE COMBINES

Thore has been a pronounce tendency

for many isolated Japanese marine insurance com- panies to seek absorption by the larger concerns because it bas become more difficult for them to maintain business. The Teikoku and Togo Companies turn to the Tokyo Kaijo Company, the Nis- shin and Nitto Companies to the Kobe Kaijo Company, the Settan Fire Insurance Company to the Osaka Company, the Yachiyo Company to the Nisshin Com- pany the Tokiwa Company to the Chiyoda Company, and the Dai Nippes Company to the Kyodo Company.

This steamer is fixted with Refrigerating machinery, ensuring a plentiful supply of ice, fresh provisions etc. and has superior accommodation with Electric Light throughout and Electric Fans in the State-rooms. For these reports there seams to be no solid foundation, or at any rate, they were very much exag- igerated. That the two groups have separated their respective hipping interests is true, but the Pegotiations which have lately been going on do not imply any aggravation of the conflict be tween them. They have concern- ed the carrying out of mutual decisions of both sides resulting from the fact that Herr Hoga Stinnes was not re-elected to the. firectorate of the Hamburg- American Line at the last general meeting of that company. The settlement of this matter has been delayad. says the Hamburg cor- respondent of Vossische Zeitung, only because the transfer of the various shares coming into ques- tion proved to be an extraordinary difficult matter. If Hugo Stinnes has now retired from the two Africa Lioes, the correspondent already quoted explains, that does not in any way mean that he is abandoning bis shipping interests. but that he is concentrating them on his own shipping companies. Whereas formerly Stinnes, the Hapag, and the Norddeutscher Lloyd each owned, about one- third of the shares of the Africa companies (Woertuano Lins and German East Africa Line), now the Hapag and the Lloyd" will have the preponderant influence. On the other hand, the result of the retirement of the representa- tive of the Hamburg American Line from the board of the Ham- burger Verkehrs-Aktergesell- schaft will be that the Flapag will withdrew from the subsidiary

companies. The Hamburger Ver-

kehrs-A.-G. (Hamburg Traffic Company), which was founded fr 1919 with a capital of 2,000,000 marks, increased ita capital at the beginning of this year to 8,000- |000 marks. Among its founders. in addition to Hago Stinnes and the Hamburg, American Li were the two Africa oduisaies already mentioned and the Bim- burg firm of Rob. Mylanama JadJournal of Commerés.
