COMMERCIAL NEWS.

SALT IN TSINGTAE.

The salt industry In Taingtau has taken lang strides in recent times and there are nafawar than ten Japanese salt companies in- cluding the Dai Nippon Salt Com pany and the Tokyo Salt Com- pany. However, while an excESS of supplies has been cansed, the Monopoly Bureau pays too little for its salt, the producers com- plain. Therefore, they find it difficult to maintain business. Some time ago, a plan was set on foot to amalgamate the distressed concerns but it has subsequently, been dropped. The purchasing. price of the Monopoly Bureau has further been lowered from Y18 to Y1.01 per 100 kin for 'good quality, and from Y1.03 to 91 sea for low quality. This lowering has caused the amal- gamation idea to revive. All the companies, and the appraisement of their property will be found difficult. There are indications, however, of amalgamation being

accomplished in the end. 2

DECLINE OF JAPAN-JAVA TRADE. Trade inquiries to and from the South Seas, have declined greatly owing to the continued grave situation of the branch offices of Japanese companies. Especially has the depression in sugar circles diminished purchasing power in Java to an amazing extent. Phosphatic ores are до того attractive, due to the chemical industry in Japan having beep disheartened. Nor pearls and corals the subject of business any longer. The only visible sign of commercial life is that inquiries are dispatched to Japan at intervals for knitted goods and so on, but as yet there are difficulties in the way of their resulting in business because of Japanese goods being exposed to competition with British and Ger- man goods.

POSTMEN ON STRIKE AT ODAWARA.

are

Some thirty postmen in the employ, of the Odawara (Japan) Post Office have gone on strike. Early on a recent morning these postmen assembled in the house of one Kato, and after a confer- ence they agreed on a strike, their ¡decision being communicsted to the post office. This notification greatly alarmed the authorities of the post, who did their best to prevail upon the discontented postmen to return to work. At 2 p.m. ten of the number resumed work only for one delivery, and declared their intention to join the others in the strike the follow- ing day. Their demands are an increase of pay, an eight-hour day, and the grant of two public holidays a month.

** HOOVERISING” CHINA. According to a telegraphic repor: from Mr. Wellington Koo. the Chinese Minister to Britain," says à Shanghai dispatch to the | Mainichi, the possibilities of the financial bankruploy of China are again forming a subject of discussion in some British papers, and the need of international control of China is expatiated upon in certain journals.
