Murphy, Inc. marine enginears. and surveyors, were filed in the D. S. Coart at. Shanghai last week. The authorized amount of capital stock of the new con- cern is Tis, 150,000, divided into 15,000 shares of Ts. 100 each. The first board of directors will he composed of Messrs. W. I. Eisler (American citizen), C. Reeves (British) and D. W Murphy (American). Stevedore work, the building and operating of steamships and the sala of ressels and boats of ptery des- cription, will come within the scope of the new venture.

KOREAN CUSTOMS TARIFF. · Dr. Midzuno, Administratire Superintendent, declared in a Press interview that the Customs tariff between Japan and Korea would be retained during next fiscal year. It was the ideal of the Government-General, he ex- plained to abolish the barrier as 8000 as possible, but financial difficulties forbade that ideal be- ing realised for an ther year at lesst. The authorities did no: think it timely to replace the Customs tariff with an income tax

or another new tax. and came to the final decision that the customs tariff must be continued during next fiscal year. In order to facilitate economic intercourse between Kores and the, mother country it might be Eigbly desirable to effect the speedy recoval of this Customs barrier, but taking various cir- cumstances into consideration is seemed not in politic to preserve it peading the discovery of some new and excellent sources of revenue. Korea. which had hitherto been a producer of raw material and consumer of manu- factured articles, had begun to see a manufacturing industry gradually brought into existence, and the maintenance of the present Customs tariff would be found protective of the infant industry. At any rate the Government- General would lose over seven million yen a year by abolishing' the present tariff, and could not hazard such a great loss without risking impediment to the PTO- gress of important adruinistrative plans.
