RAILWAY CONTRACTS,

It is stated that a big contract for axles for the Indian State Railways which Scottish steel- makers were hoping to secure, has been placed in the United Stales at prices about 30 per seat. lower than the Scottish makern were able to quote. On the other band, the North British Locomo- tive Co, bas secured an order from the New Zealand Government. for 45 large locomotives, part of contracts for railway material to the value of £2,000,000 which has been placed in the United King- dom.

METRIC SYSTEM IN JAPAN.

The recent Japanese Law (number 1 of 1921), the object of which is the autimate substitution of the metric system of weights and measures for the present Japanese system contains the following provisions; Article 1.-- unit of measurement shall be the metre and the auit of weight the kilogramme (these are substituted for the "shaku "and the" kwan") Article 2-The metre shall be determined by the standard metre delivered to the Imperial Govern- ment in accordance with the Ma- tric Treaty, and the kilogram 139 by the standard kilogramme delivered to the Imperial Govern- ment according to the Metric Treaty.
