TRANSPORT, OF AMMUNITION.

The Chinese press states that Chao Ching-hua, managing direc tur of the Shanghai railways, hub issued instructions to his subordinates not to allow arms and ammunition to be trans- ported ou the railways. In future when arms and ammani- tion are being transported, a representative of the Ministry of War must come to the railway authorities and make application in person.

RAILWAY COMPANIES".

OBJECTION.

Transportation companies oper- ating on the Shanghai-Hongchow- Ningpo Line have gone on strike. They state that the Chekiang Treasury Office has given instruc- tions that all goods transported must undergo inspection by re- gular inspectors, as it is believed that the companies' accounts and the Revenue Offices accounts differ. The companies refuse to agree to such inspection. A com promise has been urged by a third party.

SOUTH MANCHURIA RAILWAY.

The traffic returns of the South Manchuria Railway Lines for the last fiscal year, ended on 31st March, 1921, gave the record showing, concerning which Okura (Assistant Managing Director of the S.M.R. Co. Traffic Department) is stated to have made the following remark-Since the elimination of the supernumeraries last year, the Traffic Department has been rather short banded, and despite this, a surplus amount of some Y,5,000,000 bas been earned. The saving of coal may have been one of the causas, but the happy result is mainly due faithful services of the Rail- to the way employeers directly indirectly concerned. On this account, the sum of Y,50,000 has been defrayed for distribution to the staffs of the Railway Stations and the Locomotive and Train. Section. No murmurs have been heard from the clients. Neither. has the congestion of goods been complained of, and the goods sheds and storing grounds along the Railways Lines have been almost cleared of their storages.

The Management feels a sincero satis- faction with the splendid returns, which, through the joint efforts of the Railway employees, have been earned.
