It has definitely been decided to launch the freighter Cathay, the fourth vansel built by the Kiangnan Dock and Engineering Works for the U. 8. Shipping Board, on the 26th instant.

PILFERAGE AT SHANGHAI, Pilfering of cargoes sooms to be increasing steadily at Shang- hai. The magistrates appear to be taking a lenient view of the matter. For instance, a coolie who was detected pilfering from some bales on a jetty was given seven days' imprisonment.

Canton and Shanghai, sometimes calling at Swatow. Through shipowners operating in tickets can be obtained and through Bills of Lading are issued all to Northern and Yangtaze Ports via Shanghai. MANILA LINE:-A weekly service is maintained with Manila by vessels with good passenger accommodation, sailings from both ports every Friday, HAIPHONG LINE:-Sailings approximately weekly for passengers and cargo, calling at Hoihow when inducement offers. BORNEO LINE :-Ona railing per month between Hongkong and Sandakan by a steamer having up-to-date accommodation for passengers.

The new steamship Kerstone State, second of the trans-Pacific liners allocated to the Pacifio Mail Steamshin Company for oporation from Seattle to the Far East, was due to sail from New York to Seattle via the Canal and Pacific Coast porta on April 30. The Keystone State will be followed about a month later by the third 535-foot steamship, the Bay Stato.

KIANGNAN DOCK WORKS AS SECURITY.

Admiral Liu Kuan-nan, direc- tor of the Kiangnan Dock and Engineering Works, and other Imembers of his staff have sent a · strong telegram to Peking pro- testing against the Government's alleged action in concluding a loan with a certain country for $5,000,000, with the Dock as

The question of the time and cost of the alterations to enable this construction to be undertaken at the Royal yards is being investigated, and the results of the inquiry will be taken into consideration when the time arrives to place orders for the new ships.
