RIVAL TO TAINGTAO. The latest report concerning the port of Haicho, Shantung, which may be regarded as some- thing of a rival port to Tsingtao, is that reconstruction of the harbour has been decided on by the Peking Government, and that Director of the Haichow Harbour Works Office has been appointed in connection with the scheme.

ENGINEERING INDUSTRY IN BRITAIN.
The Times' Engineering Supple- mont, in its raport on the engineering districts of Great Britain, shows that conditions and prospects are far from satisfactory on the whole, and that a certain amount of apprehension is being felt as to the future. The follow- ing is a resume of the report: Scotland. The principal engi neering and shipbuilding indus- tries of the West of Scotland are in such a position that not even those most closely con- versant with the circum- stance can дау, with any degree of accuracy, what their iminediate future will he. In steel-making a continued attempt is being made to reduce prices so as to obtain additional orders from the shipyards, and also to prevent the importation of sup- plies from Belgium and America, but so far with only a small degree of success. North-East Coast. The condition of trade on the North-East Coast may be gauged from the fact that the number of adults on the registers of the Labour Exchange in the northern division exceeds 55,000. In the mining areas there is an amount of unemployment and short time such as has not been experienced since the 'eighties. Sheffield.--The condi- tion of the steel trade in Sheffield shows no improvemont on the line. There is comparatively little work on hand, and booking of new orders is on a very limited scale. Lancashire. The des- pondent tone of the industry in the Lancashire area continues. There has been practically no response to the invitation to trade offered by the further falls in the price of raw materials, and most firms who remain at work are simply proceeding on old con- tracts, which are now decidedly moro remunerative than the few now orders that
come to hand. South Wales.-Stagna- tion in' trade is materially checking ongineering develop- monis in South Wales. Birming- ham. The course of events in the engineering trade of the Birmingham district during the past month, so far from showing uny improvement, has emphasis- ad the decline. New business has been reduced to the most neagra proportions; with the balance of old engagements in hand drawing nearer the point of exhaustion unemployment has increased at a rapid rate.
