A considerable decrease in the production of abaca for April as compared with previous months will be shown in the monthly fibre report of the Bureau of Agriculture which is still under preparation. Figures obtained from the Fibre Division of the Bureau show the amount of bales of abaca certified during the month to be approximately 84,000. This is a decrease of more than 24,000 bales as compared with the previous month. The decrease has been due to the 4 inability of Samar and Leyte to keep up with their normal out- put. The reduction in the amount of bales of abaca certified in the two provinces is very abrupt for the month of April. The abaca provinces since December when the Christmas typhoon swept the abaca districts, have not been able to put on the market the normal amount of fibre but the decrease acted in Lerte and Samar has been most marked in comparison with other provinces. The severe drought that is at present prevalent throughout the whole archipelago is causing further difficulties among the abaca growers of the islands, New plantings made since the Christmas typhoop are feeling the effects of the extreme" heat and prolonged dry spell. Unless rains come soon'ît is feared that the set- back to the abaca crop will be most serious. The drought may; also kill the parent shoots. All the abaca provinces are facing great economic difficulties be- qwe abaca has failed to produce for the people sufficient profits during the past months. Most of the abaca growers and strippers are now employed in the produc-
