They went to Doug- laa aboard the steamer, but failed to get off before the vessel started southward from Gastinaa ohan- nel. Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner said they did not notice that the steamer was on her way until it was too late to get off at Douglas.

Held up Eight Times. New York, September 15.-The American steamer Portland arriy- ed here to-day from Swedish and British ports after having been held up by eight war veusein on her way eastward and west- ward. The freighter ssiled from San Francisco Beveral months ago with a cargo of barley, beans and dried fruits consigned to Stook- holm and carrying a British con. anlar certificate providing against interference. On Jane 14, the British cruiser, taken to Kirkwall Portland was held up by a and four days later discharged part of her cargo at Blyth. She then started for Stockholm bat was held up twice by German submarines which took part of the cargo. From Stockholm the Portland sailed for England and was held op by two more German submarines. After leaving Gravesend three British des troyers beld up the Portland' before she was clear of the war Bobe.

The Union Seanehip Company of Vancouver, which runs a re gular fleet of steamships up north, steamships this winter, instead of has decided to lay off three of its two, which wasthe number laid off Jast winter.
