The Elephant and the Whale.
What would a war between Germany and England mean? Blamarck che likened snob a conflict to a struggle between au elephant and a whale, reither being able to drive a blow home in the cther's element. Dr. Pe- tere beld that this comparison ro Longer stood. There is little
doubt," be asid," that for reasons mentioned farther on, the whole of Europe would be dragged in to such a war, which would be both a soi and land war and would extend over the whole world." He admonished thoar who talked so glibly of German hostile intentiona against England to bear in mind riake that Germany would gun by taking such a course. Some 15 millions of her people are depend- ent upon their country's relations with other countries, and in the evert of a war with England most of her foreign trade, her ship- ping, her fleet, and such colonies 48 Ebe posseseca, would, humanly speaking, te ruined, the eff sote of which on the whole lifa of, the -nation would be fearful,
On the other hand, sixty million odd of Germans are not to be an-i nihilated by such wounds, how- ever deep they might be, and if they were cut off from fields cf} activity oversen they would have
to look round them nearer home. Daring such a war as has been referred to it was bighly probable, that the Union Jack would wave over Tsingtau, Swakopmund, Dar-es-Salaam, and other German pasessione; but it was ro leas likely that the German Eagle would fly over Copenhagen, Am- sterdam, Rotterdam, and perhaps Brest and Antwerp. In the eveni of such a war there would be no room for neutrality on the part of some of the countries bordering! on the German Empire; they
tions, to which, owing to a for- tuuate aircke on the part of a publisher, far more attention has been paid than they deserved, advocate of India.
