were revived recently when the Board of Trade inquiry

into the disaster was held of Jaxton Hall, Lindon. The in- uiry is being held by the Earl of Dysartas Wreok Commissioner, tsaisted by nautical assessors. Telling the story of the disaster for the Board of Trade, Mr. K. B. D. Acland said the Volturno, which was owned by the Canadian Northern, Steamebip Company, Aud ohartered to the Uranium. Steamship Company, loft Rotter Jam on October 5 with 661 passengers and a crew of 93. Four days later, when the ship was being buffeted by a heary Atlantic gale, a fire broke out, Chirty of the crew and 103 of the passengers perished. The ship carried life-saving apparatus in excess of requirements. Her 19. boats were capable of carrying 809 people, or 150 more than sore actually on the vessel. Each one of these boty had apparatus for spreading oil on the water. Describing the cargo, counsel said that in No.: 1 hold there were Btowed drums and barrels of various chemicals and oils.
