Japanese Shipping Boon, The Mainichi" reports that with the usual slackening of trade in the summer the demand for
freights has declined. This has in
turn affected negotiations for the purchase of steamers. Of seven" steamers, which have been pur- chased by Japanese, bat have not yet been delivered, it is pro- bable that the orders for three or four will be cancelled and the bargain-money forfeited. Coal freights from Moji to Yokohama, the standard rate of the coasting trade, bare declined to 70 sen per ton, and shippers are wanting even at that rate. It is feared that the marine transport business will experience a bad alump in the autumn.
Empire Arrived Slightly
Damaged,
Showing signs of a very rough trip, the E. and A. steamship Em- pire arrived from Hongkong and Japan ports at 8:30a.m yesterday. one day late with two passengers and four sacks of mail, says the "Cablenews American" of August 21. When only 10 hours out of Hongkong, early Sunday morning, the Empire struck the typhoon, the force of which gave the officere* and crew a few very lively hours, One gangway, which was lashed to the side, was carried away, railings and benches were smash- ed and considerable minor damage was reported. Upon arrival at Manila yesterday, Captain Miller, Lloyd's surveyor, made a survey of the boat and finding no sorious damage done she was allowed to proceed to Australia yesterday.
The Loongeang, which also arrived from Hongkong yester day, also one day late, escaped the worst of the storm as Captan Leask ran away from the blow
Armed Merchantmen.
The first marchant vessel to" reach Australis armed in accord- ance with the recent decision of the British Admiralty is the Aberdeen liner Themistocles, which arrived in Melbourne this week says the Sydney “ Town and Country Journal" of July 30, A Sydney ahipowner, commenting on the idea, said:--“ I know some people consider this an alarmist measure, but in seems to me highly commendable. It certainly engenders a feeling of greater security, and, indeed, was ron- dered imperative by the fact that Lights, Fans, Swimming Tank, Band, Games, Amusements, quite a large number of foreign Wireless, Submarine Signal Service, and Bilge Keels..
