THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH
THE FORECASTING OF
"HURRICANKS.
The College of the Jesuit Fathers at Belen, in Havana, is farbus not only as the principal éducational institution in the West Indies, but ulo pa account of the very important and valu ab'» Observa'dry which is supported there to the messe benefit of the commaica and na. vigation of the Gulf ped Caribbean Sea.
Just as the progress of sanitary and medical rience has been the meas of avoiding and evin preventing the yellow fever in these parts
of the world, so the advancing study of meteo Pridegy has canbied pregnutions and defence® against the cyclones and hurricanes which are so frequent and disastrous.
cyclónőnaphoscope." By these aby mariner can tell with almost as much accuracy as tho officials of the Observatory; the approach of cycloos and adopt messores for safety accordingly...
The organization of the cycline service throu hout the seas is most complete. There are stations at Trinidad, Barbados, Martinique, Antigua, Porto Rico, Jamaica, and Santiago de Cuba. These stations, besides the other Jesuit ubsoivatorios in the Island of Cuba, send re- gular daily reports by cable to 'Balen. In the cyclone season, or when required, other stations,
Guada 10 St. Thomas, San Christopher
lupe, Dominica, and Granada send reporta
Besides this there are two cabled observations, daily from Washington and the Mexican Na.. (ional Observatory,, By this means information is received well in advance of the approach of, cyclonic symptoms. The Observatory has often given warnings of the oncoming hurricane, trating its probable course with the greatem exactitude, when ill it was more than five
Throughout the two seas
This year, the Obse.valory celebrates its jubice. Since fifty years ago the Fathers have been taking exact readings of baton eters and atmospheric conditions, and during thirty years they have devoted themselves in the study of hurricanes and perfected the science of fore-hundred miles away. casting them with an exactness which is almost miraculous. People in the Noith of America and in Europe have little idea of the force of these storms, nor of the immense damage which they, bring in their track. On Cctober 24, 168, a terrible hurricane fell sa the city of Havana, which resulted in the wreck in the bay, one of the safest in the world, of more than seventy vessels. In the same month of 1840 another of particular violence struck the city; 1,878 houses were (olat- lv destroyed, 50g1 were partially ruined, 235 ships were wrecked in the bay, whilst 488untained serious damage, 114 persons were killed and 76 wounded. Compare with this frightful disaster the record of hurricane of equal violence which visited Havana in December, 1956. Every tree in Havana was blown down; only two small schooners were wrecked, and a' lew houses on the sea shore were blown down, The to al of lives lost was twenty five. And this considerable decrease in the damage wrought by the hurricane was entirely due to the tel phobic, and telegraphic notices rent out By the Fathers' before the storm had approach ed the island.
It is claimed by the admirers of
THE JESUIT OBSERVATORV
that it is facpertory to the Washington signal services, of which there is also a station in Havana Proof of this was given at the time of the great hurricane which devastated the 1awn of Galveston in 1900. The signal service announced that the storm had expanded itself in the Upper Atlantic. Father Gangoiti rent out cable warnings that the cyclone would pass ever Texas; and as he predicted, the buricane ruck Calveston, entirely destroying a large

THE DAILY REPORTS are awaited with the greatest inter.st. Looking through the old files of Cuban newspapers one ...is atrück with the great respect and reverence wth which the work of the Obiervatury was regarded. Steamship companies, cable com pinies, chambers of commerce, ship masters and planters all seem to have joined again | SANTA and again, to offer their thanks to the Fathers whose work has resulted in an incal culable saving of human life and of property |. Under the rule of Spain, no ships of the Gov |ernment were allowed to leave the harbour of Havana until the Observatory reported that the weather conditions were likely to be good, The earliest known forecast dates from, 1875 In 186 the capqa of ad'American ship, the Liberty, disregarded the warning signals, and the ship was lost in the frack of the storm with all but two hands.
}
The Pill Charl of Washington of 1889 says: "All ships' masters should pay the greatest attention to the storm signals of Havana. Their importance to commerce can scarcely be over estimated. As Havana, has very complete telegraphic information eastward early and reliable news is received of every hurricane that is likely to reach that, port of any of the adjacent waters."

The first decision at which the learned Jesuit atrived was the connection of the upper clouds with the storms. He came to the cagclusion that those light, Acecy clouds so high up in the air and commonly called goos feathers were the fleer messengers sent from the heart of the storm to announce its advent, That such was the case has since been amply demonstrated. Farther he found that the direction of those white cloud corresponded exactly with the xrea of the burricane that the vanishing-point of their converging lines was the part of the horizon from which the storm would come: The, next Important discovery was that the differedt alludes of the different clouds revealed the different currents of air. For a cyclone, be it well understood, is not one mighty wind blow. ing only in one direction, Rasher it is several such winds blowing in several different direc tions. For this reason the cloud observations at Belen are made under the three beadings of
