The Attorney-Generat opened the case toên: after the jurors were sworn, He said that the prisoner was chareed with the murder of Gertruda Dayton--a crime of such a revolting Dature as to become unparalleled in the annals of crime in the stony. May Hemsicad, of 3, Hollywood Road; knew the deceased woman, Gertrude Dayton, for between eight and nine years, but she had nat seen her for several years. On the night of the 3rd August, Gertrude Dayton, accom panied by a man, went to witness's house, She had never seen the man before, but he appeared to her to be a man between 28 or 29 years of age. When the Dayton woman cn tered the house her first words wère: "I feel tipsy." The man was introduced to witness as Mr Jones," but the deceased mentioned that that was not his real name. Drinks were then served and between Gertrude Dayton; Mr. Jones" and wines nine plats of champagne were consumed. The Dayton woman Rave her a chit for the drinks, which witness des trayed as she did not wish to be mixed up in the affair. The witness then spoke to being shown some postal orders which were in the passes- sion of the man. She believed the Dayton women was wearing some jewellery as witness saw something sparkling about her.
