LOCAL AND GENERAL. SHORTLY after ten o'clock this morning fire broke out in a coil shed in the Naval Yard. The flames spread rapidly and by the time the Yard Brigade was on the scene three sheds were burning fiercely. A strong fight was put up by the firemen to save the only remaining shed and in this they succeeded. The damage done could not be ascertained. The origin is stated to be spontaneous combustion.

As the result of one of those spasms of commercial enterprise which periodically overtake the business circles of Great Britain, and are not infrequently benignly blessed by the (overnment in power at the time, it was decided that the importance of China as a market for British manufactures should no longer be neglected or left to be exploited by the Teuton and the Frank. The consuls discovered that their belated: reports, culled from the voluminous statements of the Imperial Maritime Customs and issued months afterwards, might incorporate hints as to the trade openings which might be taken advantage of by energetic Grms desirous of entering a new and profitable sphere. An attempt in that direction was made, but it can scarcely be alleged that these hints were of a character to afford much guidance to the average manufacturer in the United Kingdom, and undoubtedly they were, and still are, far behind the elaborate, candid and thoughtful reports. THE London Chinx Express says:-- of the Customs Statistical Department.
